Bed bugs: what you need to know

Bed bugs are nocturnal insects that feed on human blood in order to develop. This pest usually lives in groups near the bed and, once they have colonized the bedroom, the clearest sign of their presence are the annoying bites on the body, often accompanied by allergic reactions.

Where are they? If I don’t see them...

Bed bugs detect human presence thanks to body odor and heat. That is why they bite us while we sleep and, after feeding, they hide in the folds and seams of the mattress or bed base. There they nest and remain hidden until nightfall to bite again.

When the space of the bed becomes too small, they spread to other parts of the bedroom: behind the headboard, nightstands, corners, skirting boards, or even sockets. One of the easiest ways to confirm their presence is the black fecal spots they leave in their hiding places.

Bed bugs and health

The problem with a bed bug infestation is not just the bites. The true burden is also psychological: insomnia, anxiety, and even paranoia, knowing that these insects are present in the place intended for rest.

A bed bug infestation is much more than a problem of bites and cleanliness. It is an invasion of the most sacred place we have: our home. And although the main focus is usually the physical eradication of the pest, the quieter and exhausting battle that is often ignored is the one fought in our mind.

The most common consequences are:

Although bed bugs generally do not transmit diseases, their impact on quality of life is enormous.

I have bed bugs... What do I do now?

The first common mistake when detecting bed bugs is to throw away the mattress. Many people quickly leave it on the street or in dumpsters, without warning about the problem. However, this action does not eliminate the pest, because bed bugs are not only in the bed; they also hide in furniture and different corners of the bedroom. With a new mattress, they will bite again in no time.
