We often receive calls from people worried about night-time bites, which are usually attributed immediately to bed bugs. However, this is not always the case.
The origin of the bites that appear while we sleep can be very varied: from mosquitoes, fleas, scabies mites or dust mites to allergies caused by detergents, synthetic materials or pet hair. Even some allergic reactions such as urticaria can be mistaken for insect bites.

This week a worried father contacted us because his daughter, who was studying away in Alicante and sharing a flat, had the bad luck to find bed bugs in her room. This is common in flats with a high turnover of students, as these insects can arrive hidden in suitcases or backpacks.
During the conversation, the client also told us that his wife was suffering from night-time bites at home, which increased his concern.

We started the thermal treatment in the room where the bites were occurring. We applied dry steam at high temperature to the protective fabric covering the underside of the bed base to eliminate the hidden bed bugs. Then we removed that fabric, where they usually hide, and continued applying the treatment to the entire piece of furniture.
The client had previously dismantled the furniture in the room, which greatly facilitated our work and allowed a complete application of the biocide.

We continued with the treatment on the mattress, which had an anti-bed bug cover. We always recommend using one, as it prevents new hiding places for bed bugs. Although in this case no active presence was detected, we removed the cover and applied the thermal and biocidal treatment anyway, also eliminating possible dust mites with a double, highly effective process.
We then moved to the living room, where there was a large, spacious sofa. After a visual inspection with a flashlight, we carried out the same procedure as in the bedroom. In the following images you can see the disinfection of cushions, seams and the inside of the sofa, ensuring the complete elimination of bed bugs and mites.

After finishing the work, we recommended keeping protective covers on mattresses and pillows as well as checking luggage after each trip to prevent the accidental introduction of bed bugs into the home.
