This past weekend we went to a client’s house in Torrevieja who had a wasp problem. The colony was of the common wasp and had built its nest inside a cypress hedge covered with ivy.

The common wasp belongs to the genus Vespula, specifically Vespula vulgaris, which usually builds its nests sheltered under roof eaves, roof tiles, shutter boxes, etc. In this case, the nest was located inside the cypress and ivy hedge, as can be seen in the images.
At this time of the year, mid-August in Torrevieja, and with the heat waves lasting more than 15 days that we are experiencing in 2025, wasps —whatever the species— are at peak activity. The workers are working at full capacity to feed the larvae.
To proceed, we equipped ourselves with the beekeeper suit to avoid stings, since the workers are very protective and aggressive when it comes to defending the nest. Upon removing the first layer of the wasp nest, we found that it was quite large.
During the process, since I was not wearing beekeeper boots, I suffered a sting on my Achilles heel. Even so, we managed to completely extract and neutralize the wasp nest so that the client can enjoy her garden without the risk of stings.
Wasps play an important role in biological control against insects that are agricultural pests, in addition to contributing to pollination. However, when they settle in urban areas, they represent a danger to people who live or pass nearby, since their stings are painful, they can repeat them several times, and defend themselves collectively when they feel threatened.
