The "dark side" of paradise: Why it's normal to be terrified of insects on the Costa Cálida
▶︎Let's be honest. You moved to the Region of Murcia looking for the sun, good food and peace of mind. You left behind the cold and rain of northern Europe to enjoy your retirement or your new life on the coast.
Everything is perfect... until you come across the first "jumbo-sized" cockroach in the kitchen or discover that wasps have decided that your porch is their new home.

Why your reaction is completely normal
We know what you feel. And believe us: your reaction is completely understandable.
If you come from the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands or Norway, you are not used to living with this type of wildlife. In your countries, insects are a nuisance, but they rarely invade with the aggressiveness we sometimes see in the Mediterranean.
Here, the heat and humidity are not just enjoyed by us; pests love them too.
Feeling repulsion, disgust or even fear does not make you "weak" or "dramatic". It is simply that nobody prepared you for this. You have zero tolerance for these invaders, and that is logical: your home is your refuge, not a zoo.
What really worries you (and that's normal)
When a foreign client calls us from La Manga, Mazarrón, San Javier or Los Alcázares, we usually hear the same concerns in their voice. They don't just want the bug to disappear, they need reassurance.
You are probably wondering:
- Is it safe for my pets if you fumigate?
- Will they come back when I go on holiday?
- Are these insects dangerous to my health?
The answer is yes, you need to be careful.
Pests in coastal areas such as Cartagena, Águilas or San Pedro del Pinatar are not just unpleasant to look at. Cockroaches can contaminate your food, rodents can damage the wiring in your home and bed bugs can turn your nights into a nightmare of itching and insomnia.

The most common "visitors" on the coast
In our experience travelling along the Murcian coastline, we constantly come across the same problems in the homes of international residents:
American and German cockroaches
Yes, the ones that sometimes fly. They are fast, dirty and slip through any crack. They are the queens of the nocturnal fright.
Invasive ants
They don't send scouts, they send entire armies after any breadcrumb that falls to the floor.
Wasps and mosquitoes
Particularly bothersome if you have a swimming pool or garden. Nobody wants a barbecue to end in A&E because of a sting.
Rodents
They seek shelter and food, especially in homes that are closed for extended periods.
Why "do it yourself" doesn't work here
We understand the temptation to go to the supermarket, buy a spray and douse the whole house.
But pests in southern Europe are resistant. Home remedies usually only attack what you can see, not the nest that is hidden away.
This is where we come in. At Control de Plagas Levante, we don't just "apply poison". We understand your concern and we speak your language: the language of effectiveness and safety.
If you live in Torre-Pacheco, Fuente Álamo, Mar Menor or anywhere along the Murcian coast, you don't have to live with the enemy.
Call us. Leave the unpleasant part to us so that you can get back to enjoying what really matters: your life in paradise, without surprise guests.
