Wasp case in Cartagena and Cabo de Palos

During this period of pest control work, we have encountered very varied cases. Today we are going to show you some outstanding cases we have had in Cabo de Palos and in Cartagena.

Wasp nest in Cabo de Palos

Last week we responded to a call due to the presence of wasps that had been seen entering and leaving a palm tree Washingtonia filifera about 5 meters high, located next to the communal swimming pool of a residential complex in Cabo de Palos.

Apparently, a neighbor had already suffered a sting. In the image you can see the palm tree; as noted, its trunk had not been brushed, which made it easier for the wasps to build the nest inside the petioles.

We arrived at 9:30 in the morning. In the middle of August, the high temperatures make wasps very active, so at that time the workers were already looking for food to feed the larvae.

When applying the insecticide and removing the petioles that covered the trunk, we discovered that it was a large wasp nest.

Wasps are very aggressive and can sting repeatedly. When the workers detect danger, they come out in groups to defend the nest, attacking without hesitation. Hence the importance of adequate protection with a beekeeper suit.

They build their nests with chewed wood, which gives the surface of their combs a paper-like appearance. Finally, as seen in the image, we managed to completely remove the nest, bringing peace of mind back to the neighbors.

Wasp nest in Cartagena

A young resident from the Barrio de la Concepción, in Cartagena, called us distressed by the large number of wasps inside his home. He later explained to us that he suffered from a sting allergy and also had a true phobia of these insects.

In his ground floor home, wasps were entering one of the rooms. During the first visual inspection, we noticed some activity on the roof, which was sealed with insulating foam.

When inspecting the room, we observed that there was a vent covered with plastic: it corresponded to the return of the air conditioning in the false ceiling. After removing the vent, we found the following:

We proceeded to apply the proper treatment and discovered that it was the German wasp (Vespula germanica), a very aggressive species that is extremely defensive of its nest.

Even with the beekeeper suit, I received a slight sting, although not serious, and we continued with the work. After removing the visible part of the nest, we kept hearing a loud buzzing. We then decided to remove the thermal insulation and new hidden sections of the nest appeared.

We continued the treatment until completely eliminating it. However, buzzing could still be heard: these were worker wasps entering from the outside through visible holes in the roof. We went out and carefully sealed those entry points with expanding polyurethane foam, thus concluding the job with total success.
