Bed bugs are still present in the Region of Murcia, despite what many people believe. They are silent pests that can be found both in neglected homes and in impeccably clean households. In this article we share some real cases in San Pedro del Pinatar and in Murcia city, and explain the most effective treatment to eliminate them in an ecological and safe way.

A real estate agency from San Pedro del Pinatar contacted us. They had rented out a small flat near the centre, and on his first night the tenant woke up after noticing something strange. When he turned on the light, he discovered several insects on the bed, which turned out to be bed bugs.
According to the estate agent, the flat had been unoccupied for several weeks, which led us to think that the bed bugs hiding in the bed base had gone a long time without feeding. These insects are very good at detecting heat and human scent, which is why they usually hide very close to sleeping people. They also secrete an anaesthetic when they bite, which explains why victims do not feel anything until the marks appear on the skin.
In the video you can see the thermal treatment behind the bed base. Although there seemed to be no bed bugs, when high‑temperature steam is applied to the fabric that covers the lower part, the insects begin to come out of their hiding place and die. Afterwards, with the owner’s permission, we remove this covering to continue the treatment inside the bed base, where we find more bed bugs and eliminate them.
We carry out the same procedure with the mattress, being especially meticulous when treating the seams, where they usually hide. Finally, we apply a light or residual insecticide, depending on the case, to make sure there is no trace of bed bugs left.
Many people are surprised when they discover bed bugs in their homes and ask us how it is possible if everything is clean. The most frequent reason is travel and temporary accommodation: when we stay in hotels, hostels, Airbnb properties or any other type of lodging, we can unintentionally bring bed bugs back in our suitcases or backpacks.
These insects are attracted to human odour, because they associate it with food. For that reason, they look not only for people but also for dirty clothes that retain our scent. This is why they can cling to luggage and travel with us to new homes.
Something similar happened in a shared flat in the Vista Alegre neighbourhood in Murcia. The tenant contacted us, worried because she had seen bed bugs on one of the walls of her bedroom. In this type of housing, where there is a frequent turnover of students, the chances of infestation increase.
After carrying out a thorough inspection of the bed bases, we found dark stains, which are digested blood droppings and a clear sign of the presence of bed bugs.
In our experience, thermal treatment with high‑temperature dry steam is the best ecological method to disinfect a mattress from bed bugs and even mites. We carefully treat the seams and every corner where eggs, cast skins or live specimens may be hiding.
In this particular case, we finished by treating the slats of the bed base with lacquer, thus guaranteeing the complete elimination of the infestation and preventing future outbreaks.
