A couple of weeks ago a neighbour from Los Dolores (Cartagena) called us quite worried.

Both she and her young son woke up every day with bites below the knees. They were small red bumps that wouldn't stop itching. She also told us they had spotted tiny black bugs jumping around the floor. Clear as day: there was no doubt, it was a case of cat fleas.

The curious thing about this story is that our client has no pets. So how did a flea infestation end up in her home? Simple.

The "taxi" of fleas: stray cats

In many areas of Cartagena, Murcia and the towns of the Mar Menor, it is common to find colonies of stray cats. Many people, with good intentions, feed them. The problem is that these felines are unsupervised; that is, nobody applies flea-repellent pipettes or puts anti-flea collars on them.

These cats move around from place to place looking for food and become true vectors of flea infestations. When you walk calmly and unsuspectingly near where they live or eat, the fleas jump and latch onto your trousers or ankles.

Just like that: you bring the fleas home with you.

Once inside, they make themselves at home

A flea doesn't care whether it settles in a carpet, some curtains or on a person's legs. Once they arrive in your home, they stay. They feed on human blood, lay eggs in the most unsuspected corners and multiply at a dizzying speed.

That is why, if you notice bites or see small black bugs jumping on the floor, it is essential to act immediately. If you let time pass, they spread throughout the entire home and, in the end, the treatment ends up being much more expensive.

Why don't home remedies or supermarket products work?

The big problem with fleas is their eggs. Traditional insecticide (biocide) products cannot penetrate the protective layer covering flea eggs. That is why, when someone tries to fumigate on their own, a few days later the bites are back: the eggs have hatched.

Typically, pest control companies have to carry out a second treatment around 10 days after the first (which eliminates the adults) in order to deal with the newly hatched young fleas.

Our method: Savings and effectiveness in a single step

At our company we know that having to carry out two treatments makes the service much more expensive for the homeowner.

To avoid making flea removal excessively costly, we use highly persistent biocides. These products maintain a residual effect and remain active for weeks on porous surfaces, smooth surfaces and all types of fabrics. This way, when future fleas hatch from their eggs, they are automatically eliminated by that prolonged effect.

The result? A complete success. A few days after the treatment, I called our client in Los Dolores and she confirmed, greatly relieved, that the bites had already disappeared.

In addition to our work, she put into practice the key tips we gave her:

  • She washed all the bedding at high temperature.
  • She contacted the local council so they could fumigate the area where the stray cats eat and so that the zoonosis service could remove them, cutting the problem at the root to prevent future infestations.
